49 Special

I designed the CD art for 49 Special's debut album. All the tunes are originals and it sounds awesome. You can order the packaged CD from CD Baby, or get mp3's from itunes.

Guys, thanks for the messages! Things are good, I moved to Savannah last month to start teaching in the illustration department at SCAD this fall. I'll post up some images of the town and school, it's really nice here. Hope you're doing well!

Killer job on this one! The color palette and image treatments work really well together.

I was wondering, what was the process of getting of this job? Did you go through the band themselves or some kind of label?

thanks,

Matt

Thanks Matt, hope your semester is going well so far! I had the inside track on this job because my brother Jim is the banjo player :)

I've done a few cd covers for friends bands and love doing it since there's been a lot of creative freedom. One of them was in SI last year. Even if there is no budget you can get a nice portfolio piece out of something like that, if you can get inspired by the project. Gary Kelley would say he made a career on doing theater posters in trade for nice print samples. He could do whatever he wanted for them, and won gold medals at SI year after year, the work is beautiful. Not a bad trade off. Jim Burke has done something similar with his Dellas Graphics calendar project. He art directs that, and gets illustrators to do images for free because its great promotion (the image has to contain a frog, otherwise it's whatever they want to do) . Every year you see a couple of those in SI.

Also wanted to add that they had the cd cases made as "eco wallets" through Disc Makers. The printing came out great.

Awesome! Thanks for the feedback on that. I actually did a double 7 inch album cover for my graphic design class last semester and really enjoyed that project alot. Im not sure if I ever showed it to you but its up on my blog. Album cover and concert poster art is something I would really like to try to get into though. There's some really killer screenprinters in that field that do some pretty great work as well.

Looks great Doug. With the last few posts you seem to be handling things more in a graphic design approach. Is this something you're exploring at this stage of your career, or are you doing it simply because it is the best solution? Just curious.

Hi Rendez, good to hear from you! I agree the last few assignments have been more graphic, for the reason you mentioned- I thought the solutions called for that particular treatment. But I am interested in working this way more, breaking away from my own handwriting or drawing 'style', where everything is treated similarly, and bringing in elements and textures that contrast one another more dramatically.

Hope your are doing well!
