New work for The Nation
(issue 2/18/08) .
This illustration was done for an article by Adina Hoffman titled
"Lives on the Ground", a review of Israeli and Palestinian memoirs. Hoffman has chosen to discuss "The stories of individual people who live and breathe the sweeping political choices made by prime ministers and presidents" in order to provide a human dimension to the abstract political debates over Holy Land politics. I tried to echo this sentiment in the illustration by contrasting the scarred, abstract map with a scene suggesting diverse everyday street life.
I wanted to make different styles work together in this piece. For the map I painted watercolor and acrylic layers, working back and forth with collaged type. The magnifying glass is also handled in a more graphic way to set up a contrast to the warmer, more atmospheric street scene.
